Rewatching this talk reminds me that a big part of Merb was improving software engineering in the Ruby ecosystem. https://youtu.be/2YIyf6POs2A I give a philosophy of testing that is focused on interfaces; the punchline is that Merb was investing in "request tests."

It was a critique not of the Rails framework but of the way that people built Rails apps. But it wasn't just a critique. We put our money where our mouths were and prioritized request specs.

This is the kind of thing that wasn't actually a conflict between Rails and Merb at an ideological level, and where it helped a lot that we built it out and organized a community around it.
