Bit obscure, but my favorite way to remember that I need to request a mutex's lock in order to use the data in it is to think of like needing to request permission for docking at a space station in @EliteDangerous. /1

Then, when my ship is in the docking bay, my ship has exclusive access to that bay. In order for someone else to use that bay (like in order for another thread to access the data in a mutex) I have to leave that bay and release the lock. /2

Not sure about going into the bay - but coming out of it it could be that MutexGuard implements Drop and releases the lock automatically - freeing up the data (like the docking bay) for someone else to use without manual intervention.
