I really don't get why we don't have
as an emoji (person + woman + girl). Of all the emoji to remain gendered, family units seems like a really weird one to leave out

so unicode allows this, it's a matter of implementors, and most emoji fonts have to have individual images for each one of these (except Microsoft I think?) this is also why mixed skin tone families took forever

right, I'm explaining why: they need to like ... 50x the number of images they ship, which is .... a problem when the number is already huge

so pre neutral emoji there were ... (n= 4*6, n + n^2 + n^3 + n^4) = 346,200 combos, now it's n=6*6 -> 1,727,604 . idk if the old person emoji count because then it would be 8*6. It's a major increase in size and I suspect they need to convince folks to include it.

like, it's not great but the skin tone thing also took many years to happen for similar reasons. Ended up happening!

This tells me that MS's approach is much more aligned with the flexibility of the underlying representation. I'm surprised the other vendors haven't tried to move in that direction.

eh, not really, there are tradeoffs here, and microsoft picked this design way before this flexibility really existed also Microsoft controls the underlying platform and can ensure that the stack has good support for vector emoji fonts
