Did I miss something major in school? 20 / 5 (4) is identical to 20 / 5 * 4 from my understanding. Multiplication is always left to right?

i would probably not pick 1 but some people were taught that 1 is what you do it has to do with the priority you treat the implicit multiplication

Really the lesson here is "we shouldn't have ambiguous syntax in math" IMO. Why did folks decide implied multiplication was a good idea?
