i would probably not pick 1 but some people were taught that 1 is what you do it has to do with the priority you treat the implicit multiplication
Huh. I didn't realize that folks were taught that multiplication from parens had different operator precedence. TIL

Really the lesson here is "we shouldn't have ambiguous syntax in math" IMO. Why did folks decide implied multiplication was a good idea?

I hand-parsed an expression like that wrong in my first programming class b/c I assumed division had a lower precedence than anything. (Though I probably would have parsed 2/5, say, as a single literal token.)
