Postgres issue: I want my application user to be able to create extensions so application frameworks can enable any extensions they need on initial migration. It appears that there isn't a permission that allows extension creation other than superuser. Any ideas?

I really don't want to go with the artisanal hand-crafted solution of "log in as a superuser and create the extension beforehand" because I don't want to add another step to remember in deployment.

I think I'm going to create an extensions schema in template1 and add it to the search path so any new database will have them enabled, but it seems like I should be able to just say "this user should be allowed to create extensions".

Extensions can execute arbitrary code though. Requiring superuser permissions for that operation makes complete sense IMO.
