Hopefully they get updated when the code does. Unfortunately code isn't tied to a point in time. Commit messages are!
If you change some lines but not all of them, you'll have to review all commit messages associated with all changes. git blame will only show the last ones for each line. I write that kind of commit message but I think doc and comments are more important.
