just to be crystal clear: if a stranger asks you to buy them a fucking gift card to solve a problem, no matter how legit they make themselves look — they are //absolutely// trying to scam you

been listening to people who mess with scammers and some of the scams are so fucking vile. "ICE is on their way to deport you, unless you pay the government with fucking google play gift cards" and then today someone i know was approached on steam with a gift card scam!!

i'm so mad, and also slightly guilty that occasionally my gut reaction is "i could run a tech support scam so much better than this" Perhaps, eevee, not all things need to be improved upon

This was before gift card scams, but the reason I got into this industry was because my dad had serious dementia and gave *all* of his social security income to mail scams. I was 24 so couldn't get control of his bank accounts, so a full time job was all that was left.

These sort of scams can destroy lives. The folks who fall for them aren't the only ones affected, and those that fall for them the worst end up on all sorts of lists and give everything to these fuckers.
