Raaah, trying to do some @rustlang but cargo fails to update http://crates.io index. It downloads for a few minutes until it reaches 30% and then says the server sent back a erroneous answer... Can I download this index manually? Why does it have to start again on failure?

If it's failing to update the index, that means that it can't fetch a git repository hosted on GitHub, not http://crates.io .
Details about the error would help more but I'd also check if gh is having some sort of outage or if you can clone it manually (rust-lang/crates.io-index)
