One important note is that I said "energy", not "delta-v". You can technically reach "an orbit" by crashing into the surface, but that doesn't change the energy involved, just changes the source from chemical thrusters to the planet's inertia

hmm, but if you're counting potential energy changes as part of it then all answers are equivalent, no? If you're counting potential energy lost from the spaceship-sun gravitational system then you also have to count potential energy gained
