SDKROOT should be the only thing you need to set for typical compiling needs

So like... Mojave’s SDK comes with a legacy version of the headers pkg in /Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages. Am wondering why this could not be used in Catalina... like the file itself is not hard to get but has anyone tried this? If not, why not? Am just trying to understand.

That’s from the command line tools package, not Xcode. You don’t need the command line tools package if you have Xcode installed

Correct, but I do not usually need the whole of the XCode monstrosity. Further, I mostly also just use home brew or macports to get various tasks done and they work just fine with only CLT and do not need XCode. What am I missing?

Nothing. I might be misunderstanding you, but the command line tools package is still available for Catalina AFAIK and works as an SDKROOT too

Right. So what I was wondering was that... if you installed the headers, both home brew and macports give you a local “include” folder. So one will have /usr/local/include. Was wondering if that was not the case any more because of what OP asked. Need to change path at best. 🤔🤷‍♀️

Ah, I think @johnregehr is primarily trying to get clang to find the system headers which are traditionally in /usr/include, but which Apple puts in $SDKROOT/usr/include (where SDKROOT can be Xcode or a CLT install)

Right, yes, so that was what I was saying/asking... if you installed the header pkg you can now get a copy of the very same headers wherever? Like I do not see how these should be any different as these are provided by Apple. We are basically copying them from CLT or wherever.

If you do things the Apple sanctioned way, then the hope is you won’t have to copy headers around and come up with new hacks that break every year

Just throwing this out there, but maybe Apple could consider sanctioning what the ecosystem does instead of breaking it every year to be weirdly different from every other Unix flavor?

“Different from every other UNIX flavor” would be one thing, but most people who say that actually mean “different from Linux,” which is a single not-even-UNIX flavor.

fair enough but "find and install the secret package to get /usr/include" and then a few years later "fuck /usr/include entirely" is a bit much

Problem is the ecosystem doesn’t do any one single thing.

TBC I’m not saying the way SDKs work on Apple platforms is great, I’m just trying to lead folks to the path of least resistance that I know of
