Versus the Russians, who still needed a bigger warhead and therefore bigger rockets to get them into space. Their philosophy was essentially to just keep strapping on more engines/rockets until it worked.

Sounds like most of their space tech was ahead of its time. Would be interesting to read a similar book about the Russian program
