It's very hard to talk about the nuance of Rust because it always sounds like we're evangelizing to people who haven't already looked deeply into Rust. "Have you heard the good news of the borrow checker?" "The compiler stopped you so you wouldn't die from your sins."

Complete misunderstandings of what Rust does (borrow checker is not GC, you'd do ref counting in C as well in the same cases, the existence of unsafe doesn't betray a shortcoming of the language, etc.) makes it hard not to want to rebuke, but it just comes across as defensive :-/

(1/10)xEngiNieR: Automata @mgattozziThe reason you see guys defend C so vicariously is because their livelihood and prestige are deeply intertwined with it and choosing any other language would be hard, but it gets covered in bad faith arguments that have real simple solutions: Stop using C for new things.1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -

eh, i think this person is saying things in good faith, but is perhaps not aware of the specifics of Rust and has largely responded to the Go suggestion. (some of the idiots in the replies, though)

The thing that grates me is how gleeful some people are to rebuke a use case for Rust as if we were running around telling people to RIIR RESF style, with *factually incorrect* arguments
