I’ve read in a few places that communities above a certain size tend to devolve. Maybe reddit can function like a company that does stock splits: every time a subreddit grows to sufficient size it gets split in half. And do it for the main site as well.

It's especially weird here though since online parenting communities are generally really toxic. You wouldn't expect the Reddit one to be good

I have come to the conclusion that some subreddits functionally serve as reverse "sin-eaters", devouring the virtue of the rest of Reddit so they can be purified of having good things.
