It's hard to guess without an example of what kinds of functions you're working with and type signatures. I was only guessing it was one of those 'static lifetime inference rules because you said you had a static lifetime pop up out of nowhere.
Boxed trait objects are static by default. Box<dyn Foo> is Box<dyn Foo + 'static> unless you specify another lifetime.
