as part of feedback on my talk, someone told me that postgres uses MVCC rather than read/write locks -- is this true, and are these even mutually exclusive?

Not "instead of" per se, but MVCC allows these locks to be used less often and at smaller scopes

But this isn't novel or unique to PG. InnoDB does the same.
