A UI pattern I've noticed that has been increasingly common: Ask for the username, and only when that is submitted show the password field. Why it's bad: I use a password manager for all my logins which auto fills in username and pass. This setup requires twice the clicks

They do it to check if you're using an SSO provider, but yeah it should be done so that your password manager doesn't break

This hadn't occurred to me but that's exactly why this is becoming popular. Surely the developers writing these features use password managers themselves, seems like they would implement it to work both ways if it was trivial.

Yeah, it's not too hard to do (literally implemented this 2 weeks ago for a client for this reason), but we still make you click submit twice. Just have the password field populated when it appears
