A Hispanic candidate doing this would have been labelled as too Hispanic-y for doing so. Beto gets brownie points for it, but people understand he's white so "ultimately still on our side" and it doesn't alienate. People understand it was a bit.

I'm actually really curious as to how this played out demographic wise. My guess: white Democrats love it. Hispanic people are divided.

As someone who grew up and lives in New Mexico, I didn't think much of it. Assuming El Paso is roughly the same as Albuquerque it's just a thing. People here speak Spanish. In public contexts is useful to repeat in both. Miami is a reasonable city to do so.
