it's incredibly interesting to me that one way that rust, following influence from ML family languages, has got rid of entire categories of problems by simply not having subtyping

Just wait until you learn that Rust has subtyping (I couldn't figure out a way to make this not "well actually" -- it doesn't make your point less valid. It's only for lifetimes)
