so am I right in thinking that every rust function with a generic return, e.g. collect(), sum(), into(), is implemented by constraining the return to implement some trait and then just calling that trait?

*barges in kool-aid man style* *pushes up glasses so far they're on my forehead now* actually, std::mem doesn't let you create values of type T, it only let you think you did, while actually creating one (1) undefined behavior

Well, since it's undefined behavior, you can't conclusively exclude the possibility that the behavior is the creation of a value of type T
