      given mutexes are precisely for synchronising threads, why do you need to wrap it in an Arc

      mutexes are not send, because then you couldn't share them accross threads.

      No, Arc doesn't make a non-send value send. It just gives you multiple owners in a thread safe way. Mutexes give you mutable access in a thread safe way
