I guess most apps aren't nearly as read heavy as http://crates.io is. Only a tiny fraction of our traffic involves writes. That's probably not true of the majority of apps

We do this at large scale companies in fact. It’s a mechanism that can be used when you can guarantee certain work loads don’t need to be consistent, or you’re guaranteeing that things are consistent through some other means, like Lamport clocks.
