After 8 months of work, http://crates.io finally does index updates asynchronously, with retries -- meaning less load on the web server, and the db always stays in sync with the index.https://github.com/rust-lang/crates.io/pull/1588 …
Another huge side effect of this change is that our server no longer times out requests when booting. Previously it had to clone the index on server boot which takes >30 seconds, so we dropped a few hundred requests every restart. No longer.
