I agree with everything but wanted to add that re-entrant mutexes should be banned. :)
They are necessary in this case but I didn't want to dive into it here as it wasn't relevant to the point

Tangent: They are never necessary if you design the system correctly. If they seem necessary, some underlying part of the system design is broken (I used to write kernel code and device drivers, FWIW.)
