"🙄 Silicon Valley invents [institution that is floundering or worse, creating a market opportunity because people want a fix badly enough to pay out of pocket for it]" is a lazy attack in the best case and a dishonest attack in most cases.

"🙄 Silicon Valley invents public education." If you thought about it before tweeting your outrage, you'd see that the most prominent characteristic of @LambdaSchool is that they only get paid if students succeed financially, which is utterly different from public education.

The argument boils down to "governments have attempted to do this in the past, therefore it's stupid for a for-profit company to attempt it." I am very far from being a libertarian (in the modern US-centric sense of the word), but this position seems ridiculous to me.

They also didn't invent that concept, though. Turing School used to have the same guarantee. They were required to drop it when they went for govt accreditation.

Turing School required upfront payment but guaranteed income, right? But Lambda School doesn't even get paid until you are employed at $50k/year or more.

Ah yes, I missed that difference. You're correct, their setup was you paid up front (there are scholarships if that's a problem), and could get a refund if you didn't find a job at (IIRC) 65k+ in 6 months

Before Lambda, I worked part-time for a bootcamp with a job guarantee refund policy. But requesting a refund requires the student to take initiative and provide documentation they met all the conditions. It's inherently adversarial. Lambda's ISA is much different and better.

That's a really good summary of the difference. Lambda's model is the first one I haven't felt trepidation about.

My point was more that getting accreditation is what prompted the drop (which I don't recall the exact details of, unfortunately). I'll be interested to see what happens w/ Lambda there

Yeah, makes sense. I'd be very surprised if they went for it, unless this funding model ends up falling through and they get desperate.

We’ve looked extensively at accreditation, and for certain programs it makes little sense. The only reason schools do it is to gain access to Title IV funding from the government. It imposes restrictions on how quickly we can iterate on curriculum.
