I thought it was only that price with a 1-year contract back then? And 300 with a 2-year contract?
Interesting how price expectations have changed. In 2007, the original iPhone cost $400 and was considered crazy expensive for the time. Now $750 is Apple's "budget" option.

The original iPhone cost $599 actually and with inflation it would be $731.75 today, which is surprisingly identical for an absurdly larger feature set. In 2007, that price got you the state of the art (which was also the best and only option from Apple), comparing that to 2 year old hardware doesn't really match up.
