I've been writing a lot of JavaScript lately, and I constantly wish that there were an alternative designed by one person, rather than by historical accidents followed by a committee. My kingdom for a Python-like or Ruby-like or even a Perl-like!

The Opal runtime is almost 10x the size of this entire app, including all JS and CSS, which vexes me. I also don't know anyone who's actually used it, so I'm afraid of whether it will actually be maintained in five years.

I've become much less optimistic about wasm after trying to compile Rust to it, but we'll see.

The tooling story for wasm is extremely immature (most things are <1 year old, some of the "go to" tools are only a month or two old). I'm optimistic it'll improve over time.
