There are a lot of Ruby methods that generate a new array on every call. Here's a few %w{+ - collect compact drop drop_while flatten map reject reverse rotate select shuffle sort take take_while transpose uniq values_at |}

The issue is that many people chain these things. Which looks nice. But each and every cal generates a new temporary array that is thrown away. Instead it’s much faster to use their mutable cousins (the ones with a bang!) when possible.
