TFW you fall over fantastically /on the concrete/ when you just ran to your car to get stamps. Neighbors all like 🤨 No one helped, as usual.

My situation is very different from yours (difficulties walking from complications on Scoliosis), but I've found the difference in how people treat you when you "look handicapped" to be dramatic. I've got a cane that I use to help stabilize when falling over, shit 240 chars...1/2

It took me a while (years) to be able to accept an icon of disability, but honestly having a cane that I like makes a huge difference. I have no clue if one would in any way improve your situation, but I guarantee it will improve how people react in that situation.

And it is 100% possible to end up with a mobility aid that makes you feel ok about yourself. I googled "house flame cane", and loved the results (mostly because I can now answer "what's with the cane" with "it makes me go faster").

Being in the US helps a lot. Had to leave Canada last year due to issues w/ disability law and not being able to use a scooter that I had as a mobility device when I lived in big cities. Same shit though. Didn't look like a mobility aid, and I didn't look handicapped. It's insane

It's really upsetting how much appearances matter though. Plenty of folks use a wheelchair who aren't paraplegic, but if someone in a chair stands up to pick something up, it gets shared on the internet mocking "It's a miracle" as if they are faking :\

That's the thing. I have Tourettes (and other issues) & I have actually had parents point at me & say to their children "that's why you don't do drugs". On a day when I need my mobility aid I don't get those comments. People assume they know our whole situation just looking at us
