I finally watched the @realDonaldTrump briefing as he said "Iran can do what they want," and was amazed how it was interpreted in media. I suggest everyone watch it, because obviously he didn't mean he was encouraging them to do what they want, but stating that they, in fact, do

Watch and decide. Did he mean they can do what they want, i.e the US was saying they could, or was he saying in the context of his claim that Iran was being rolled back, that they can do what they want...but are being pressured to reduce influence?pic.twitter.com/cOVgsnfber

Trump may be wrong about his characterization of what Iran is doing, but it's clear from the discussion that the "do what they want" was a throwaway comment, in the context of comments directed against Iran's role.

full Trump quote on Iran pulling out of Syria: "Iran is pulling people out of Syria, they can do what they want there frankly, they are pulling people out of Yemen, Iran wants to survive now." So: He's taking credit for Iran leaving Syria and says that's a good thing. 1/2

Of course. Trump is a 'loose' speaker as we all know, and it would be unreasonable to expect the media to report the context given what we have seen.

I agree with you. Made the same point here: https://www.jns.org/mideast-experts-see-trump-still-committed-to-confronting-iran-despite-conflicting-rhetoric/ …. His statement was somewhat confused, but I agree he didn't mean what everyone is implying he meant

You're leaving out the key word! "they can do what they want THERE" "they can do what they want [in Syria]" The entire context is different by cutting the quote mid sentence.

thank you Seth. I was tired of reading so much of the journalist taking this Trump commentary to the first degree and not taking into account the context.
