I finally watched the @realDonaldTrump briefing as he said "Iran can do what they want," and was amazed how it was interpreted in media. I suggest everyone watch it, because obviously he didn't mean he was encouraging them to do what they want, but stating that they, in fact, do

Watch and decide. Did he mean they can do what they want, i.e the US was saying they could, or was he saying in the context of his claim that Iran was being rolled back, that they can do what they want...but are being pressured to reduce influence?pic.twitter.com/cOVgsnfber

Trump may be wrong about his characterization of what Iran is doing, but it's clear from the discussion that the "do what they want" was a throwaway comment, in the context of comments directed against Iran's role.

I think that might well be right (his syntax is so hard to follow). But I agree that the phrase itself was blown out of proportion. It was everything around that that matteredhttps://twitter.com/KyleWOrton/status/1080571172360728594?s=19 …

#Trump might be able to spin that "#Iran can do whatever it wants [in #Syria]" quote as a recognition of reality, rather than an endorsement. But in context it's so much worse than that. He clearly believes he can cut a deal with Tehran, just needs to ratchet up a bit more. pic.twitter.com/u4QtgggyL0

I think his intent was quite clear. He was saying how despite being able to do whatever they want there (Assad & Russia aren’t stopping them), they’re choosing to scale down (so he says), & is crediting the reimposition of sanctions. Basically taking credit for himself.

Yep. But it's what he says that is leading to that's the problem; he thinks this build-up of pressure ends with a "better deal". The escalate-and-deal play he did with DPRK is what he has in mind, and he thinks he is quite close.

That’s a good point. His comments surely suggest that he thinks they’re alike, though I don’t know if he’s being sincere.

During his campaign I'd hear sound bites and my friends would go mad. I'd follow up by listening to what he really said, in context to learn the media purposely spun what he said to frame him as racist, idiot or worse. Thats when i realized the majority of the media was corrupt

There are relentless at editing and making it something else. Even when they have to report the truth, they always have a negative comment and a crazy image of trump, while casting news. Bottom line, they know how to paint a picture, and stupid people believe it.

The way I understood it - he was saying they are weak, they are withdrawing and under extreme pressure! I don’t believe he meant they can do what they want because they can achieve what they want. He meant they can do their best but it won’t amount to much as they are weak

Seth, the media caste is too committed to hostility to Trump for details like accurate reporting to matter. We've known this for a while now.

Trump’s arrogance and the way he has behaved since he took office is why the world despises him. He opens his mouth and does not stop to think, he also exhibits toddler like tendencies when he does not get his way. This Government shutdown shows it.
