Lawyer, author, EFF's first hire, Godwin's Law creator (he/him). Retweeting!=endorsing. My opinions here don't necessarily represent any employer or any client.
People have asked me my opinion of President Biden's criticism of "semi-fascism." Well, I can't overstate my disapproval of the inappropriate use of "semi."
TRUMP: I demand we nullify the results of the last election and that I be reinstated as president effective immediately
BIDEN: See, that’s the type of thing a dictator would say
MEDIA: Biden Abandons Pledge of ‘Unity'
Former EFFer Peter Eckersley died very suddenly today. If you have ever used Let's Encrypt or Certbot or you enjoy the fact that transport layer encryption on the web is so ubiquitous it's nearly invisible, you have him to thank for it. Raise a glass.
I've reached the life stage where my first impulse, in celebrating getting a new, better-paying job with bigger responsibilities and opportunities, is to cancel the trade-in and keep the M1 MacBook as a companion to the new M2 MacBook.
Many will know of Ehrenreich's very succesful book, "Nickel and Dimed", but I was also very fond "Bright-sided: How Positive Thinking is Undermined America, her excellent book excoriating the shallow "just think-positive!" industrial-complex.
Her voice will be missed.
Sad news. Barbara Ehrenreich, my one and only mother, died on September 1, a few days after her 81st birthday. She was, she made clear, ready to go. She was never much for thoughts and prayers, but you can honor her memory by loving one another, and by fighting like hell.
Let's pause to offer sympathy to Trump supporters whose idealism and sincere beliefs are derided as bigoted and anti-democratic. It's unfair that their values-driven efforts haven’t diverted enough attention from either their bigotry or their febrile hatred of the right to vote.
Every time an advocate for student debt forgiveness--which I strongly favor--says something negative and categorical about Boomers, my first thought as a Boomer is, couldn't you have spent some of that loan money on a course in rhetoric and persuasion?
The main reason those who oppose student-debt forgiveness don't oppose bankruptcy remedies generally--even they're also debt forgiveness--is that Trump is a Chapter 11 frequent flyer but never took a student loan to attend Fordham or Penn.
My opponent is *literally* Dr. Oz 🙄
YES, the dude who is known for selling scam diet pills on TV
YES, the dude who is not even from PA + has 10 homes
YES, the dude who said he would ban abortion even in the cases of rape or incest
Say NO to Dr. Oz on Nov. 8th 🛑
For as long as I've been aware of my preferences, I've always known I love dogs and cats equally. But only during the Biden Administration have I felt the freedom to come out as bipetual.
That sleek black MacBook that was a triumph of lightness and portability 15 years ago but now weighs a ton and won't run an up-to-date OS that isn't Linux. But you keep it because the DVD drive in it works over the LAN.
It should have been a surprise to no one that, later in the pandemic, the covert cocktails-in-coffee-cups strategy quickly shifted to to-go cups when local alcohol regs were amended. 2/2
In the earliest months of the pandemic, some Silver Spring restaurants stayed open to prepare to-go orders, but for a while alcohol sales were prohibited. But if the proprietor knew you, you often could buy, sub rosa, cocktails in coffee cups while you waited for the food. 1/2
I don't normally favor transmuting beloved pop nostalgia into industrial dance tracks, but this one I like because the vocalists sound cheerful. https://youtu.be/IIJa1AfjVEc
Black Americans paid taxes during segregation for pools they weren't allowed to swim in, fountains they couldn't drink from and buses they had to ride in the back of. So...miss me with this "Why am I paying for school I didn't go to?" At least this is about uplift, not hate.
I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous. Renters have been paying taxes for YEARS that homeowners can reduce purely based on owning a home and no one says anything. Same is true for having children.
("Let's show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown." --GHOSTBUSTERS, 1984) Official White House Twitter roasts Marjorie Taylor Greene and other GOP critics of student debt forgiveness
(This guy funded his yacht-racing hobby by enticing student borrowers into helping the secondary private-student-loan market.) NYTimes, 2007. Reeling In the College-Bound
The whole Republican philosophy, such as it exists, is built on scapegoating and resentment of vulnerable populations, as a way to distract attention from their fealty to the very rich. The right-wing discourse today is just more of the same old same old.
3000 YEARS OF LONGING is okay as the title for this lovely new movie, but it doesn't capture how talky it is. That's why I think George Miller should have gone with the alternative I suggested: MY DJINNING WITH ANDRÉ.
Asking plumbers and carpenters to pay off the loans of Wall Street advisors and lawyers isn’t just unfair. It’s also bad policy.

People forget this, but more than 20 years ago lots of folks took Giuliani as emblematic of patriotism. It turns out the emblem symbolized opportunism.
