It costs $81K/yr to house a single inmate for a year. How do you propose we pay to incarcerate crimes of poverty such as shoplifting? That's just for facilities. The costs for enforcement would be in addition to that.

First of all, how is shoplifting a “crime of poverty?” Are you suggesting there’s nowhere else in this “compassionate” city for people on poverty to get food and other essential items they need?

Also, I’m not suggesting we lock up shoplifters. I’m suggesting we don’t allow them to leave businesses with stolen goods. Then, if they really need something, we can redirect them to services which the city now spends more than a billion dollars a year on.

Think bigger. The choice doesn’t have to be between inhumane incarceration and theft free-for-all.

You're really mixing your messages. You blame the DA for this and make no mention of the costs of enforcement and say nothing about addressing the factors that lead to these crimes in the first place. Walgreens is free to pay for off-duty SFPD if they care.

Yeah, it’s complicated. I wouldn’t expect you to be able to understand.
