During a gravitational elliptic orbit, the path traced by tip of the velocity vectors (collected together as to have a common origin) is a circle 😲 (made with )

Actually, as pointed out, there's a problem with the curvature. To prevent parts of the curve being untouched by the rolling circle a curtate cycloid must be used. The radius of the rolling circle must be less than the reciprocal of the maximum curvature.

It's well known that a point on a circle rolling on a straight line traces a cycloid. But what if the circle rolls on a cycloid? (made with )

Newtonian gravitation in a curved surface (warped space-time): is it possible to reproduce an inverse square Newtonian force (and an elliptic orbit) with a simple kitchen plate? (that’s totally useless but I couldn’t help working on it) (click/tap to pause - made with )

Newtonian gravitation dynamics in a nutshell. There isn't a closed form expression for the position of the planet as a function of time. Anyway, with you can "solve" Kepler's equation graphically 😳 (and let ggb make the numerical approximations...) (click/tap to pause)

Fragment found on a worn napkin in Königsberg (around 1780): "One’s intelligence can be measured by the quantity of uncertainties that he can bear".Alt. version: "One's intelligence can be measured by the quantity of cans of beer he gets before being uncertain if to get one more"

Planets in the Fourth Dimension. Great article by . Clear and thought provoking. It will probably enlarge my horizons on physics. Not recent (2015) but I discovered it just today. Unmissable!

The universally used word "robot" comes from the czech "robota" meaning "forced labor". It was first used to denote a fictional humanoid in a 1920 play by the Czech writer Karel Čapek. Robots usually act in the physical world. "Bots" are software agents acting in a digital space.

In a bowl shaped with a cycloid arc all particles sliding frictionless under their weight move with a harmonic motion (with the same T). That's because the arc length of a cycloid, from the lowest point to P, is proportional to the height of P. More info:

this is nothing special or new. Just a well known flocking system, still impressive how much can be achieved from "simple" vector operations.

I think that Reich's "Drumming" is great. It also have an interesting structure with "phasing" echoing wave interference. But there's something more. Every time I listen to it I fall deeply asleep (against my will) at around 15'. Magic! Try it yourself!

Euler's totient function counts the positive integers up to a given integer n that are relatively prime to n. It is written using the Greek letter phi as φ(n), and may also be called Euler's phi function. The first thousand values of φ(n) in

To count an animal population if you can't catch them all: capture some, mark them, release, and capture again. The ratio of new vs already seen tells you something about the total number. Shown here is iterated mark-and-recapture with a Bayesian updates to belief about pop size
