Last Saturday, my sixth bee nerd sense told me it was time to attempt searching for the first native bees of the season. The instinct didn't fail me, because I did spot the first Dialictus and Halictus of the year. [Oakland, CA 1-26-2020]

Wasp people have been bogarting the antler wasps. There are tiny wasps with antlers running around out there, people! I had no idea until I spotted some. Alas the photos aren't great as it was dusk and they moved fast. Sympiesis or Pnigalio?

What's more fantastic: just how blue male Agapostemon can be or that impressively long foldaway proboscis? You decide! [Alameda, CA 11-10-2019]

Male wasps cannot sting, but they still pretend they can. It can be a pretty effective scare tactic! Most people aren’t crazy enough to hold onto an animal that looks like it can sting. Male wasps, bees, and ants don’t have stingers because that tool evolved from an ovipositor.

It's the off-season for native bees around here but there's still lots I haven't gotten around to posting. Here are some thumbparisons of a tiny B. Vosnesenskii worker I spotted on my last bee outing of 2019. [Alameda, CA 11-23-2019]

Spider (Ambia instrumentalis, Musotiminae, Crambidae) Some Musotimine species have wing markings consistent in size and habitat (undersides of leaves) with Salticidae jumping spiders (inset).

This reminds me that as we teach folks about gardening for insect biodiversity we should be encouraging folks to create mineral rich mud puddles as a landscape feature.
