So it looks like most of those stores announced they would close well before the "surge". It sounds very much like a local problem, too, one exacerbated by social issues like homelessness and substance abuse (both can be better managed with non-cop programs)

It sounds like the cops were never really meaningfully defunded either A 3% cut to funding and they act like it's the killing blow and not just a reason to cut back a very little on the unnecessary overtime or wasteful spending

Retailers complaining about shoplifting is a perennial event. Data shows it's not worse. You don't have an answer to the day except under-reporting but there's really always under-reporting. Even with the usual under-reporting, if there were a surge in crime, it would show up 1/

the data. Unless these super- concerned retailers are reporting crime even less than they used to, which would be nuts for lots of reasons, the data correctly shows no surge in crime. And if you think under-reporting HAS increased, prove it. 2/
