    5 years of PhD and other experience in paralel has its own pros and cons compared to 3+2 serially. It's better to not disregard these applications directly and measure applications with their content. (3/3)

    They write research proposals, apply and get research grants (which maybe big enough to run a lab for a few years), get patents, publish papers, develop products and run their own teams. Obviously PhD takes longer this way, but you can develop significant skills. (2/3)

    FWIW hard threshold criterion in job ads like "x years after PhD" is nonsense. In some parts of the world some PhD programs don't pay, so people get a -full-time- job in the industry, make a career and gain seniority by doing research not necessarily related with their PhD. (1/3)

    “To start a PhD in ML, without insider referral, you need to do work equivalent to half of a PhD. Hence, in Apr 2019, I decided to dedicate all my time until Jan 2020 to publish in either NeurIPS or ICLR. If I fail, I would become a JavaScript programmer.” — ‼️

    After getting published in ICLR as an Independent Researcher, I have received nearly 100 messages from others who are looking to do the same. So I wrote a blog post on why I decided to do it and my advice to others.

    Here we go again. Dear , it's really not nice to not mail conference invitation letters for visa. An emailed file doesn't mean anything to YOUR embassy who wants it signed and stamped. If you're not providing this, then it's not an international . Just sayin'.

    Dear academia, if you organize an event and say it's an international one, please send invitation letters by mail if needed. A pdf file isn't always enough if your consulate wants a paper signed by you with wet ink from your participants for visa.
