A thread! About common pitching mistakes I encounter, but not about any specific pitches I have received. (And yes, I have done every single one of these things at some point in my career.)

*misspelling an editor’s name or not styling it correctly *mispelling a publication or referring to the wrong publication *copy-pasting a simultaneous pitch but not changing names or tailoring to different publications (‘I see you’re interested in tech journalism’)

*arguing with a no (there’s a difference between ‘no thank you please pitch again’ and ‘this is really close but not quite right, I’m open to hearing more about this element to see if we can make it work’) *clearly not reading a publication before you pitch

*assuming an air of familiarity you are definitely not entitled to *misgendering the editor or anyone else *namedropping someone who will absolutely not back you up

*slagging a writer or recent piece at a publication (‘are you interested in a response piece to...’ is totally reasonable, personal attacks are not)

*The one thing I haven’t done: expressing anger about rejection, especially in abusive or threatening ways. Do it once, you’ll go on my list of people to never commission. Threatening content that feels credible goes straight to Legal.

Pitching is hard! Rejection sucks! In addition to being a full-time editor I still freelance and I still get rejected! There are a few editors I’d love to work with where nothing has quite landed and it’s been frustrating for both of us! And yet, we keep trying.

p.s. if you are stressing out about pitching etiquette that suggests you care about and are sensitive to how to be respectful when interacting with other humans, you are probably doing just fine.

In conclusion, if you’ve got questions, I’ve got answers: AMA about pitching now or any time, it shouldn’t feel like a mysterious and frustrating black box for you.
