I visited San Francisco about 30 years ago for a conference and it remains the only city I've ever seen that had piles and piles and piles of homeless. I'd never seen anything like it anywhere and I didn't understand how that city could be so badly managed as to have that.

I remember thinking it was such a beautiful city. Ghirardelli square, Chinatown, all of it was so lovely. And then tons of homeless. It's a shame that a beautiful city with money (bc it's not poor!) is fucked up bc of the hippie remnants. I sound like I'm 100, but it's true.

I would be, too. The tent encampments are what I remember. I'd forgotten the words for it. Generosity is good until it becomes enabling screw ups to remain screw ups.

Then I'm scratching it off my life on cities to revisit. I had thought of visiting SF on the way to Tokyo on my Lifetime Trip. I was going with my niece, and then stinking Covid screwed up my trip.

It's going to be EPIC. We go to LA, then Tokyo for a week, then a cruise around Japan, then back through SF. It's my trip of a lifetime. She's crazy about all things Japanese, so we're hyped. I can die peacefully after I make that trip.
