It's the exact opposite. It creates blemishes by inserting links that are easily spotted by bots and likely treated as a different sort of signal than a naturally given, at the time, editorial link.
Well, I'd argue with the fact that this is not a natural link. If they mentioned you, it's only natural they'd link too. Citing your sources is a good habit. #vcbuzz

Yeah, it could still be an editorial decision. It's not a "naturally give, at the time, editorial link" though - emphasis 'at the time'. It's undoubtedly a strong signal that the site is engaged in SEO.

Don't forget that unless you are an Amazon, you won't find 100s of those unlinked mentions. You are lucky if you get a few links in which case you are fine. If you ARE Amazon, then your link profile will stand it :) Either way you are probably fine
