When I studied with Oswyn Murray one of the books in his reading list was about Shaka and the Zulus. Similar regime. I agree it’s not when you reflect on it attractive.

All Spartans had PTSD. Crypteia was terrible. Teaching your children to not respond to pain, to steal to survive, to beat and bully everyone you can when no one is looking, it a tough way to go through life. But Alexander wanted no part of them.

I think a lot of the famous Spartan quotes were apocryphal, but this is my favourite. Almost worth having your city wiped out for the chance to say it. Philip II of Macedon to the Spartans: If I invade you will be destroyed, never to rise again. Spartans: If.
