it seems someone has tweeted about writers being in direct competition with each other, & as many have pointed out, this is a largely daft attitude. Yes, it's normal to feel jealous sometimes, but your peers are your best cheerleaders & support network
as a side note, I was always told growing up that I shouldn't get into writing because it 'was too competitive' - quite a damaging thing to be told when you're just figuring out what you want to do. The reality is, my writing friends have been a foundation stone of my career.

I buy easily half my new books as a direct result of other authors I like tweeting about them
As a reader I’ve always enjoyed seeing writers treat each other as friends and colleagues, and have found excellent authors new to me after they were shouted out by other authors.

I know A Lot of authors, many of them sitting quite close to one another on bookstore shelves. Not a single one of them would consider themselves *in competition* with the rest. More books, more stories, more words out there in the world: all of them consider this a GOOD THING.

That's just my Author signed editions. There's several thousand more across my bookcases. Always room for more, even if I have to buy new bookcases.
