It's a comforting, and lazy, thought that people disagree with you because they're evil. That way you don't have spend time and energy thinking how to refute their points.

Yeah, being lumped in a group labeled “sadists” doesn’t really encourage me to engage meaningfully on a policy issue either. Who would’ve guessed that insulting one another would be a poor strategy for compromise?
