Today I prioritized #LB1060, my bill that prohibits employment discrimination against hairstyles historically associated with particular ethnicities, such as locks, braids, corn rows, and others.
Currently, there are no federal laws or regulations prohibiting this, despite many nationally reported stories showing that it is common and widespread. The experiences African-Americans face regarding their natural hair is disheartening.
Nothing that grows naturally from one's scalp should be deemed unprofessional nor should one have to alter who they are by subscribing to euro-centric norms in order to be considered palatable in the workplace.
I am proud to stand in support of working women and men, particularly those facing unfair discrimination at work through no fault of their own. It is my responsibility to use my position to lift up the voices of others.
This bill seeks to raise up the voices of women and men who have endured employment discrimination because of a lack of clarification on what is included in race discrimination.
