killdeer nest on the ground you can tell you're getting too close to a nest because you will see an "injured" adult hopping around a Decoy

oh wait maybe they don't nest on the ground but they do take their chicks out to forage in fields at least anyways I respect the ploy good parenting A+
Show this thread -
wait I googled it they do have ground nests little holes both parents share childrearing duties high paternal investment

now WOODPECKERS these boys dislike em I rarely saw them but we lived in an echoey neighborhood sometimes while playing I'd hear a spooky taptaptaptaptap thought maybe it was a ghost
Show this thread -
dad was around once when I got spooked and explained it was just the damn woodpeckers I've resented them ever since

seagulls were fun kind of a pest but idk I'm fond of them I once tossed one a jalapeno during a school picnic my teacher told me that I had probably killed it because seagulls "can't vomit and can't eat spicy things"

I have complicated feelings about magpies on the one hand: beautiful. charismatic. on the other: huge fucking assholespic.twitter.com/wPXkBCbCEw
Show this thread -
my dad once saw a magpie divebombing a snake snake was a big boy as far as the snakes near our house went maybe 2ft apparently a harmless breed dad got between the magpie and the snake scooped the snake up into a duffel bag why? no idea that man is a mystery
Show this thread -
we took it home dad let us put his big work gloves on and hold it in the front yard and my terrified mom yelled at him to get rid of it (she has a justifiable reason to fear them) we released it in the park far from any magpies it peed on me
Show this thread -
I have also been peed on by a garter snake and a ball python I sure have been peed on by a lot of snakes
Show this thread -
I think dad justified his snake rescue with "magpies are jerks" but I don't know why he brought it home he just did that sort of thing sometimes

in 2nd grade we had to do a bird report we were each assigned a bird all my friends got cool birds falcons eagles hummingbirds guess what mrs baker gave me (yes THAT mrs baker) a fucking vulture
Show this thread -
the report was assigned over spring break we went to stay with my grandparents near Boise ID my parents seized the opportunity to drum up some enthusiasm in me for my SHITTY SHITTY BIRD
Show this thread -
they took me to the bird rescue outside Boise which was one of the few places in the world with yeah you guessed it godddamn california condors we went on the little tour I got to see all of the other, cooler birds there was a whole demo with the condor
Show this thread -
I came home grumpy and wrote my report a brief summary would be "condors are ugly and gross and there are so few left that they don't influence the environment anymore so I don't know why anyone is paying to save them" my mom made me rewrite it -_-
Show this thread -
years later my mom explained that mrs baker had never liked me and my parents didn't know why but they didn't want to give her any more ammunition
Show this thread -
she also traumatized me with math so I have many reasons to dislike her
Show this thread -
I think those are all of the most meaningful birds I grew up with
