I want to hear more about this. I have accepted that people will see me all kinds of ways, but I know people who really super struggle with having other people have the wrong idea of them in their heads. It seems to be almost debilitating.

but to rework it from scratch – basically I've always stood out to an unfair degree. I'm taller than everyone. I'm darker than everyone. I have a weird and unique name. it's impossible for me to hide or blende in, so my challenge has always been to get ahead of the narrative

also like, this is why i'm obsessive about making friends. it's a sort of PR war, ultimately. if some group of people are going to assume the worst about me, I need to find people who I can get to think the best about me, too. so I'm always looking for people to connect with

yeah, this resonates too actually. Maybe I do do this - I am very open and direct, and I remove ambiguity. "Hi I'm myk, I may be a little weird sometimes but I'm autistic and ADHD, I promise my heart's in the right place -- please let me know if I can ever do anything to help!"

My strategy, I guess, is to make myself seem KIND, SAFE and HELPFUL -- as long as I have those down, it's okay if I also come across as WEIRD or whatever else.

It's tricky, though - I'm six feet tall and 220 pounds, it's very hard for me to project SAFE all the time but I try. This is where kindness really matters.

my dad is a big guy, 6'5" I didn't notice until someone else pointed it out upon meeting him for the first time but he is *constantly* projecting "harmless" and taking up minimal space

he says people used to posture and try to pick fights with him all the time the few times I've seen him really *move* without inhibition (an emergency, excitement, etc), it was terrifying which makes me a bit sad -- his joyful, uninhibited movement looks *threatening* to some

it was also interesting to really grok male/female strength differences and realize that, in a world designed such that most necessary physical motions are accessible to most adult women, adult men spend much of their life being extremely gentle
