    Better historical analogy might be the fall of the Shah in 1979, which clearly implicated Carter in the "who lost Iran?" debates that followed and weakened him going into the 1980 election.

    One thing to consider is that the political liability for a Democrat may be higher than for a Republican bc it reinforces the dovish, "lead from behind on national security" narrative associated w/ Democrats.
