Anyone have similar stats for A Level? My perception is more schools/colleges offer A Level geology than GCSE, it would be interesting to compare the trends.

I see 2 things, teachers discouraging pupils and university staff at open days (been to a few with offspring) unable to enthusiastically communicate career options outside of the oil industry.
-
Luckily I’ve not encountered that amongst my colleagues. The extractive-related people at our shop are in the minority, and the other folks do a stellar job of shouting about how cool Earth Science is in general!

Not sure that’s true A lot of subjects are not offered as standalone subjects in high school but are covered, at least in part, in other classes so folk go on to study them at uni eg law, dentistry, accountancy
-
See other threads for comments that, unlike those subjects, which are very known and defined, uni-level geology benefits from pre-uni exposure to the students.

I am afraid it's not just the UK that is in trouble, but many western countries. And from what I've heard it is not just Geology, but science on general. I worry that the easy access to knowledge and information on the internet is making young people feel they don't need science

I think the
@ASPIRESscience project, as featured recently on@StuartGHiggins’s@SciNotSci podcast, appeared to suggest this wasn’t the case, that pupils were very engaged and excited by STEM. - Još 2 druga odgovora

In the Philippines, geology student numbers are up. Easy to see the relevance when you have active volcanoes and earthquakes. UK geology has been focusing on resources which are now demonised. Time to highlight geology's relevance to renewable energy and all types of hazards?

Our geology program at CPP (in the US) was revitalized by adding options in geophysics and environmental resources, growing from 25 to 150 majors in 10 years
