I can finally share my new(ish) course material: "Basin Analysis - Structural style, seismic expression, and petroleum systems". Forming part of the MSc Petroleum Geoscience here at Imperial College, some of this might be more generally useful.

Great opinion piece from in response to the recent survey of research culture - focussing in on teamwork, mental health and openness in science as important ways to improve things.

"The biggest challenge to changing culture will be changing people. Power typically resides at the top – many academic managers have gone through the challenging early career stage… ‘Survivor bias’ has a lot to answer for." -

Brilliant piece by about openness, improving research culture and valuing people rather then outputs. This really resonates, esp: ‘it’s important that you feel physically and mentally able to come to work and to do the best science you can.’

The Outreach Committee needs some new members. If you work in Earth, planetary or space sciences with interests in public engagement, media, policy etc. do consider applying!

“Sadly, like many prejudices, we often wait for change to come with the next generation and then it doesn’t. Unless we now make a concerted effort, things will remain the same.” being 10/10 brilliant for 👉

  7. I was lucky enough to be in interviewed by as part of their series. It’s always nerve-wracking talking about personal issues and the human/non-science side of academia. Thoughts welcome!

More Africa - Luuq, in Somalia, has one of the most spectacular geological settings of any town. Home to ~40000 people, it sits inside a meander loop of the Webi Jubba River, with only an ~100m wide ‘land bridge’ to go in/out. Location:

I never applied for a PhD at Oxford because of this fee. £75 Was 10 hours pay for me at the time.

The fee levied for application to postgraduate study at Oxford remains an obvious and unjustified barrier preventing fair access. It dilutes the talent and diversity of our research community. Please sign the petition to remove this barrier

  12. 😃Nice to finally see this out in ! Great work by Qiliang Sun, using 3D seismic reflection and borehole data to show that deeply buried Miocene volcanoes strongly controlled the migration of thermogenic gas for long after they became extinct!

“The Oxford Graduate School advocates for the fee to dissuade prospective students from applying, due to the exceptionally high number of applicants.”... it’s discriminatory **by design** (!) []

  14. I remember when et al. first brought this to my attention, I thought they were joking! A fee to even apply for graduate study? That doesn’t sound discriminatory at all...

  19. 🧂To finish-off the session on salt tectonics, the MSc students did a salt- (rather than wine-) tasting! Featuring smoked salt, hipster Himalayan sea-salt (Triassic, I think), black salt, and 🌶 salt! 😋🤓
