Years ago I had a habit of picking at things when I was stressed. I'd think, "This is pointless, just rips up things you like, should be easy to stop." I only stopped when I realized "You're very stressed & don't have another outlet during those moments, it actually makes sense."

This kind of insight is why I really prefer hearing about burnout and recovery from others who have gone through it. It's just so different from the norm that unless you've seen it you have no context on the real lasting effects and how to deal with them. Thank you Stephanie :)

I was once badly addicted to video games. I realized they gave me something I was missing at the time: progress, accomplishment, and control over my environment. That insight was a tool: when I gained these IRL, the addiction stopped. Bad habits and addictions do serve a purpose.
